Beyond the Bench: ARDC Registration & MCLE Guidance for Past, Present & Future Members of the Judiciary

Program Description:
If you are a lawyer contemplating leaving the bench, this program is for you! Life After the Bench: ARDC Registration & MCLE Guidance
Post Judicial Service is an in-depth program specifically tailored to lawyers leaving the bench.

Specifically, the program will inform learners about the annual registration requirement for all lawyers, including judges on and off the bench pursuant to S. Ct. Rule 756(a). Next, we provide valuable insight into the MCLE obligations pursuant to S. Ct. Rule 794(a) lawyers should be aware of once they leave the bench.

We will also discuss exemptions the learner may be eligible including the Judicial Service Exemption pursuant to S. Ct. Rule 756(a)(3)(A) as well as the MCLE Exemption: Judicial Service pursuant to S. Ct. Rule 791(a)(3) and 791(b).

Throughout this program the learner will test their understanding of the material by working through hypothetical exercises placed throughout the program as well as “Test Your Knowledge” questions.

Program Objectives:
  • What registration statuses a lawyer, may choose when completing mandatory annual registration as a current, past, or future member of the bench.
  • The impact of ARDC registration status chosen on MCLE obligations.
  • A discussion of exemptions that may excuse the annual requirement to register with the ARDC and pay the annual registration fee as well as any exemptions applicable to MCLE obligations.
